Did you know that today is 143 Day in Pennsylvania?
Back in 2019, former Gov. Tom Wolf designated May 23 as 143 Day. May 23 is the 143rd day of the year. And the number 143 was very important to Latrobe native Fred Rogers, host of the long-running PBS children’s show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” which was filmed in Pittsburgh.
Rogers regularly used 143 as his special code for "I Love You," based on the number of letters in each word, and 143 Day was created in his honor as a statewide call for kindness.
While kindness — to ourselves, our friends and family, and the members of our community — is something we should be striving for every day, the overwhelming nature of modern life can get in the way of that very simple goal.
So let’s all do our best today to practice kindness toward our fellow Pennsylvanians. If you’re stuck for ideas, there’s a kindness generator on the state website, offering suggestions on ways to be kind on 143 Day, like sending flowers to nurses at a hospital or leaving a nice note for a delivery driver.
