Post-Primary Recap, Upcoming Events, and Safe Protest Tips

Updated: Jun 15

Hi Everybody,

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered on Primary Election Day. All of our candidates made it onto the ballot! However, turnout was not as large as it has been in previous years, so we're going to have to work to get out the vote for the general election this November not just for our Municipal candidates for Borough Council, Mayor, Tax Collector, and the ever-important School Board races, but also to save the PA State Supreme Court. While it might not be covered on the news, this is a crucial election year, and we need your help as much as we ever have. Please stay tuned for more volunteer opportunities, social events, and important dates and deadlines - and be sure to save the date for our Get Out the Vote Rally on October 4th, 2025.

As promised, here is a list of upcoming events. I have also added these to the Media Dems google calendar, and will continue to update this calendar. Please request access and we will approve you! If you know of any events that should be added to this calendar, please email MediaDems+Calendar@gmail.com and we'll see if they can be included.

Upcoming Events:

  • No Kings Rally this Saturday at the Courthouse 12-1:00pm. If anyone has a PA system that can handle an outdoor event of 1500+ people, please let us know!

  • County Council Meetings: June 18, July 16: 6:00pm Government Center

    • If you'd like to make public comment, we encourage you to reach out to us so we can help you craft a succinct, easy-to-deliver message to make the most of your public comment time.

  • June 24: 7:00pm Media Dems Meeting, 2nd Floor Borough Hall

  • No Kings Rallies:  Saturdays 12:00-1:00pm Springfield Mall, Rte 320 & Baltimore Pike

  • Planning ahead, we have reserved the Parlor for our GOTV Rally on October 4th. A huge thanks to Mary Ellen Feustal and our events sub-committee for putting this together!

If you're planning on attending the protests, here is an interesting read on protest optics and safety https://substack.com/home/post/p-165876420 and here are some of the highlights:

    • No violence or antagonism. Display self-discipline at all times. If you think that you will not be able to refrain from engaging with counter protestors, police, etc., it might be best for you to stay home. All it takes is one photo, one video, to make that the only thing anyone remembers.

    • Project calm, innocence, and professionalism. Dressing up in suits, dresses, blazers, your 'Sunday Best' can assist with this.

    • Let your signs do the talking. The article has great examples of clear, simple slogans that convey our message effectively.

    • Consider appointing monitors in yellow vests who will blow a whistle if there is any violence observed, then everyone in our groups can sit down to show that they are not the instigators and to make it clear who the instigators are.

    • Don't protest at night.

    • Do not confront the police or engage with anyone who appears to be in the military.

I continue to be inspired by the love, the compassion, the empathy, and the hope that's being shared in our community through these dark times. My prayer, my vision for the future is one where all of us are afforded dignity, respect, security, and freedom.

In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to visit https://5calls.org/  and call your representatives.

Thank you all so much for everything you do.

Sincerely,

Dana Marks, chair of the Media Democratic Committee
